Disaster Risk Management

LWF Nepal will build on its strong experience in all the phases of a disaster-risk cycle, taking human rights into account. It applies SPHERE standards to relief operations.

Its emergency operations include life-preserving and life-rehabilitating interventions related to food, shelter and water, especially in acute phases, and for the displaced. It engages with the affected groups and communities, supporting their initiatives to plan and implement relief and rehabilitation activities. In all the interventions, except for emergency response, LWF Nepal will strengthen the capacity of the affected communities.

LWF Nepal has established itself as an experienced organization in relief and disaster mitigation in the eastern region. In times of humanitarian crisis triggered by disasters, the organisation had provided relief materials to the affected communities many times.

It is supporting local communities in the areas of disaster preparedness and mitigation through development programmes, and by strengthening Disaster Management Committees (DMCs).

The Emergency Response and Disaster Risk Management (EPDRM) project has three priority themes.

Overall Development Goal: Displaced, marginalized, oppressed and vulnerable people empowered to enjoy their rights and live a peaceful and dignified life

Priority theme 1: Focus groups empowered and duty bearers sensitized to prevent and combat common health issues, HIV and AIDS

Priority theme 2: Focus groups empowered and capacitated and duty- bearers sensitized for pre-, during, post-disaster risk management

Priority theme 3: Refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities enabled to claim their rights

LWF Nepal has incorporated community-based disaster preparedness elements into its programmes. In all the stages, it engages affected groups and communities and supports their initiatives to plan and implement relief or rehabilitation programmes. Awareness about their circumstances as well as rights will be promoted. Sustainable livelihood and psychosocial counselling will emphasised. "
